Latino business leaders, chambers of commerce CEOs, and tourism and business recruiters will accompany Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild on a trade trip to Mexico this week. Officials from the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix and the Mexican state of Sonora will also be part of the 25-person delegation, which aims to improve tourism and political relations between the Mexico and Arizona.

These efforts were deemed necessary in light of Senate Bill 1070 and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s broad arrests of illegal immigrants in the state. Arizona’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants has not helped relations with Mexico, which is Arizona’s largest trading partner.

The four-day trip began Wednesday, and will include stops in Hermosillo and Mexico City. Mayor Stanton assumed office in January, and hopes to improve Phoenix’s relations with their southern neighbor.
