Report Highlights Gains In Safety At U.S. Mexico Border: New reports show that there are drastically less crossings of undocumented immigrants across our southern border, which is in some cases causing them to cross in increasingly more dangerous areas. “Amid all of the apparently good news about security along the U.S.-Mexicoborder in Arizona, one dark spot stands out: The number of people dying in the desert as they attempt to make illegal crossings remains stubbornly high.It’s a figure that worries and puzzles both humanitarian aid groups and organizations that want to see a crackdown on illegal immigration. For some, it calls into question the Border Patrol’s own arrest figures, while for others it suggests agents are doing their job too well, and the heavier security is pushing illegal immigrants into ever-more remote areas — which means each illegal crosser faces a greater chance of dying.”
Mexican Border Crossings Lowest in Decades, Study Finds Another report highlights the drop in Mexican border crossings in particular, which stand at the lowest point in decades. “A new study by researchers at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs upends a lot of the conventional thinking about the effects of U.S. immigration policy — most notably the contention that harsher security measures along the U.S.-Mexico border have kept immigrants out of southwestern American states. As California Watch reports, the study by Douglas Massey and Karen Pren reveals that fewer illegal border-crossers were caught last year than at any other time in decades. Legal entries into the country across the southern border have also declined, going from 219,000 in 2002 to 139,000 in 2010.”
Immigration Reform Is Key to Job Creation Finally yet another report highlights the job creation potential of passing comprehensive immigration reform. “As America continues to look for more jobs Washington can’t seem to come up with an answer. We’ve heard solutions from policy wonks, politicians, and academics, but rarely from people who have first-hand experience actually creating jobs. The voice of the small business owner is faintly being heard, but I’m not so sure our friends on Capitol Hill are listening. There is continual talk about destructive regulations and burdensome red tape, but very little discussion over specific policies and regulations that are so burdensome and in need of reform. Well, here’s one from a job creator: immigration.”
