Villaraigosa to rip Romney on immigration Tonight, the Mayor of Los Angeles is expected to give a major speech in Washington D.C. highlighting Mitt Romney’s tin ear on issues important to the Hispanic Community: “Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D) on Wednesday plans to rip Mitt Romney for the Republican candidate’s immigration stance. “For the first time in modern memory, a major political party is poised to nominate a presidential candidate who has abandoned immigration reform and instead advocates self-deportation,” Villaraigosa plans to say in a speech to the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO) in Washington, D.C., according to excerpts. “We have a candidate who on Martin Luther King Day, a day celebrating racial reconciliation, had the architect of Arizona and Alabama’s draconian anti-immigration laws campaign for him.”

DHS Appoints Advocate for Immigration Complaints After unveiling a series of new policies on prioritization of deportations, and changing the bar for re-entry for spouses and children of American citizens, DHS announced the creation a new public advocate to deal with questions regarding the new policies. The Department of Homeland Security appointed a new public advocate to handle questions and complaints about the agency’s immigration policies. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton said Monday that senior ICE adviser Andrew Lorenzen-Strait will lead the effort. Lorenzen-Strait’s appointment was to be announced Tuesday.

Utah House blocks E-Verify bill In Utah, state reps decide against using E-Verify a severely flawed employee verification system. “Rep. Stephen Sandstrom’s bid to push an immigration measure with employer sanctions through the House failed narrowly Wednesday when fellow lawmakers refused to give him permission to open a bill file. The Orem Republican had been working on a measure – similar to an Arizona law that was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court – allowing the state to suspend businesses licenses of employers hiring undocumented workers.”
