With the Republican primary in Florida this week the two leading GOP contenders traded blows over their stances on immigration. The Politico weighs in on Romneys immigration problems. Univision posts videos of Jorge Ramos interviewing both candidates.
Romney, Gingrich fireworks over immigration CBS news highlights some of the nastier comments coming out of the highly contentious GOP battle in Florida: “With Florida’s Republican presidential primary just days away — and the race air-tight — the campaign took an ugly turn Wednesday, as sparks flew between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich over the issue of immigration. Gingrich started the day’s slug-fest — sounding incredulous that Romney would say illegal immigrants should — in Romney’s words — self-deport. In other words, leave on their own. Romney fired back — saying Gingrich is also on the record for supporting the idea that illegal immigrants will leave the country if they’re denied work.Said Romney, “I recognize that it’s very tempting to come out to an audience like this and pander to the audience. … I think that’s unbecoming of a presidential candidate.”
Mitt Romney’s immigration dilemma The Politico weighs in on Mitt Romneys immigration problems: “I don’t think people would think I was being honest with them if I said I was Mexican-American,” Romney said, adding that he’d still be grateful if Ramos “put the word out.” Romney needs a better answer, and though he did his best in South Florida to project a soft line on illegal immigrants and a hard line on Fidel Castro — who he suggested would go to hell — he has dug himself a deep hole. Hispanic activists in both parties told POLITICO they are stunned by how far right Romney has moved in the past two months, and think he will have a hard time coming back.”
